When no-one is looking

‘Quality means doing it right when no-one is looking.’ Henry Ford

Our friend Henry knew a thing or two about quality. His high standards helped to make Ford one of the most successful car companies in the world. It makes you wonder what might happen if we adopted the same attitude.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us something very similar: ‘your Father… sees what is done in secret’. In fact, he says this three times in quick succession, in connection with giving, prayer and fasting. If Jesus tells us something three times, it’s fairly obvious it’s important. So it’s clear that the way we behave when no-one seems to be looking, matters. Of course, this should encourage us. If we do the right thing, God will notice, even if nobody else does.

God sees how we respond to the people no-one notices, too. As our partners reach out to the children living on the streets in Kinshasa, living with disabilities in Zambia, or living in communities in DR Congo which are hidden because they’re so far from ‘civilisation’, they know God sees what they’re doing. So, they go on serving the marginalised and forgotten. What’s more, they know God our Father will reward them for their diligence (vv4, 6, 18).

And what about us? If you’ve been persevering in a thankless task for ages, I pray this will inspire you: God sees what you’re doing and he will reward you. Or if you need a little gentle encouragement to pray, give to God’s work, or get your hands dirty serving the marginalised people around you, may this be the provocation you need. It won’t always be easy or fun, but God is good. He sees what we do in secret and he will reward us.
