The scenery around Kigeme, South West Rwanda, is breathtaking. Yet this is one of Rwanda’s most impoverished regions, with HIV and AIDS compounding life's challenges. In some homes both parents and children are battling with the disease, hindered by the fact that they cannot afford medication, hospital treatment or even adequate nourishing food.
BCT’s partner, Abisunzimana, is bringing hope and transformation to individuals and the community as a whole. Birthed in 2002 as a partnership between the local Episcopalian Church, the Health Authority and local people living with HIV and AIDS, the project now runs support groups for around 100 adults and 150 children living with or affected by HIV.
The spirit of self-help is impressive. Group ventures in several communities involving both adults and children, such as rabbit breeding, card making, vegetable gardens and tailoring, help provide food for households and generate some profit that is used for members' needs, such as medical costs.
Through the Stop AIDS Club children are impacting their community at large. Members present HIV and AIDS awareness and prevention messages through drama, song, dance and personal stories.
